On October 3, Illinois’ eviction moratorium expired. The end to the Illinois moratorium has had a destabilizing impact on many low-income Illinoisians, including low-income UIC students who have struggled throughout the COVID19 pandemic.

Resources for Off-Campus Housing Heading link

The Commuter Student Resource Center strives to provide a sense of belonging among commuter and off-campus students while offering programs and services to enhance wellness, academic success, and student engagement at UIC.

  • Online interactive training for students who are new to the apartment search, which covers the basics of the apartment search process, responsible hosting, and your rights and responsibilities as a tenant in Chicago.
  • Metropolitan Tenants Organization: works directly with tenants to provide solutions for landlord and apartment issues:

  • Quick apartment rental dos and don’ts from UIC’s Student Legal Services:
    • Never rent a unit sight unseen.
    • Read your lease, understand all your obligations and the length of the agreement before signing.
    • Regardless of the conditions or faults in the unit, rent is always due in full – for the full year you signed up for.
    • Document any repair request to your landlord in writing.
    • A landlord cannot forcibly remove you; you will always have a chance to go to court; only a judge can remove you.
    • Before you end your lease, walk through, and take pictures of how you left the unit.
    • Typical time to expect your security deposit is 45 days after you leave the unit.
    • Each lease is different, reach out to Student Legal Services to make an appointment to review a lease at studentlegalservices@uic.edu.

  • The Night Ministry is a Chicago-based organization that works to provide housing, health care and human connection to members of our community struggling with poverty or homelessness. They provide housing assistance, transportation, assistance, health care, a listening ear, and food. Drop-in services available. For more information: https://thenightministry.org/

  • LYTE Collective serves young adults impacted by poverty and homelessness. To get help: https://www.lytecollective.org/
  • Brave Space Alliance is the first Black-led, trans-led LGBTQ+ Center located on the South Side of Chicago, dedicated to creating and providing affirming, culturally competent, for-us by-us resources, programming, and services for LGBTQ+ individuals on the South and West sides of the city.
