U and I Care: Housing & Food Instability Resources

Did you know that food insecurity affects one in four college students? Food insecurity can mean not having enough to eat, but also not having access to a healthy variety of food for adequate nutrition. Over a million youth in the United States may be homeless or housing insecure either because they have been forced to leave a dangerous situation or asked to leave their homes. Among college students in particular, based on a study conducted by The Hope Center with nearly 86,000 respondents, 45% of respondents were food insecure in the prior 30 days, 56% of respondents were housing insecure in the previous year, and 17% of respondents were homeless in the previous year.

If you or someone you know is experiencing food insecurity or housing instability/homelessness, know that you are NOT alone. The Office of the Dean of Students as well as the UIC Wellness Center are great places on campus to start getting support. By educating ourselves and others, we can all create a campus that cares!
